When we were kids, Werner's school workbooks were full of designs, faces, UFO's or cartoon characters of the type of figure drawings that would get him in trouble with his teachers. His marks in Art were always A or A+ and while Werner was shy about speaking in public, his sketches spoke for him.
As we got older, wherever he lived, Werner's sketchbooks were always nearby, crammed with designs for sculptures, paintings, or mechanisms or funny and insightful statements about our culture. When I would visit, I always enjoyed leafing through his sketchbooks, amazed at the newest details and ideas and jokes.
As well as sculptures and paintings Werner left behind dozens of sketchbooks going back fifty years or more. Here are a few examples of his sketchbook art. Remembering the artist he was.
