WERNER SCHMIDT 

October 18, 1951 - February 9, 2024

Werner was born in Zaandam Holland Netherlands  on Oct 18 1952, the second of three brothers.  He emigrated to Canada with his family in 1957. The family lived in Southern Ontario, St. Thomas, Hamilton, Burlington, Trenton and Toronto.

In 1967 the family moved to the Northern Suburbs of Chicago.  

Werner attended High School in West Hill Ontario, Wheeling Illinois, graduating from High School in Deerfield Illinois.

Werner returned to Canada in 1970 to Burlington ON with his mother and his two brothers.

Werner studied art at Sheridan College (Graphic Design) the Ontario College of Art and Gerrit Rietvelt Academy in Amsterdam and  George Brown College.

Werner worked as an underground equipment operator for INCO in Sudbury, builder of school playgrounds,  and welder on Lake Freighters before becoming a full time artist.  

Werner assisted with making a wrought iron bower for St. James Parkin in Toronto, built props for Desrosier Dance Troupe, sets for various theatre companies, film and commercial sets and locations and in the Olympia York Queens Quay art department.

Werner operated a fabrication art studio for 20 years, creating metal sculptures, fine art paintings, assemblages and dioramas.

Werner has shown his work in various galleries, group shows and exhibitions, as well as displaying his work in restaurants, stores and retail establishments such as Arts on King. 

Werner collaborated with performance artist Monty Cantsin in various shows including the Music Gallery and performance art festivals in Montreal and Quebec City.

Werner was featured on Television, his art was used in theatre, movies and commercials. Werner constructed a 16 foot whale sculpture that hung over a sea food restaurant on Markham street owned by Ed Mirvish.

Werner moved to Tottenham Ontario in the early 2000's where he maintained a studio.  His eagle sculpture can be seen on Tottenham road just south of Tottenham.
